• Downtown St. John’s mourns the passing of Board Member Charlie Cook

Charlie Cook passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2011 at the age of 80. He was a long serving volunteer member of Downtown St. John’s and was a part of the original Board of Management that created the organization known as St. John’s Downtown Development Corporation in the 1960’s. Charlie played a key role in the transformation of the organization in 1989 from a corporation to a commission and the establishment of the St. John’s Downtown Development Commission and Business Improvement Area. Charlie served on the Downtown St. John’s Board of Management as Chair, Vice Chair and for the last ten years as Treasurer. Charlie Chaired the Annual Downtown Christmas Parade Committee since 2001.

Charlie was a Provincial golf Hall of Famer, helped found the Pippy Park golf course and had a long involvement in the Royal St. John’s Regatta.  He was named St. John’s Citizen of the Year in 1996, received the 1997 Pitcher Plant Award from Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador and a provincial government volunteer medal in 2000. Charlie was also involved in volunteer work with the ChurchLads Brigade, Masonic Order and Lodge, Rennie’s River-Quidi Vidi Foundation and Duke of Edinburgh Awards Committee.
