DESCRIPTION:The Annual Downtown St. John’s Christmas Parade is scheduled for Sunday\, December 1\, 2024 at 12:00 pm.\nJoin us downtown to spread holiday cheer with floats from local businesses\, community groups\, and Saint Nick himself! Just bring your hot chocolate and mittens. \nPLEASE NOTE: LETTERS TO SANTA WILL NOT BE COLLECTED AT THE PARADE ON SUNDAY DUE TO THE CANADA POST STRIKE. \nPick your favorite spot on the sidewalk along the parade route to help us welcome Santa to town! Don’t forget to bring along a non-perishable food item or a donation for the Community Food Sharing Association. \nThis event is brought to you by the Downtown St. John’s Business Commission. It is supported by the City of St. John’s\, NL Power and OZ/FM & NTV. \nWhen you come to visit Santa and his friends don’t forget to explore everything Downtown has to offer! Support Local. Shop Downtown. \n  \nParade Route: \nThe Parade starts at noon (the NL Power & CFSA food drive starts at 11:30 am) from the Johnson building on Factory Lane. The Parade proceeds west on Duckworth Street to Prescott Street\, down Prescott Street to Water Street. Proceeds west on Water Street and ends at the intersection of Springdale Street in front of the JAG Hotel.  \nLetters to Santa: \nPLEASE NOTE: LETTERS TO SANTA WILL NOT BE COLLECTED AT THE PARADE ON SUNDAY DUE TO THE CANADA POST STRIKE. \nNL Power & the Community Food Sharing Association (CFSA) Food Drive: \nBring a non-perishable food item or donate cash for the NL Power CFSA Food Drive. NL Power employees will be collecting along the Parade route. The food drive starts at 11:30 am. \nGoBus: \nGoBus users must reserve their ride. GoBus drop off/pick up is available near Jungle Jims along George Street\, between Queen Street and Adelaide Street. GoBus will access George Street via Queen Street. \nAccessible Santa Shuttles: \nAccessible shuttles are available at the NL Housing Building to Mary Brown’s\nCentre and Confederation Building to Bannerman Park and return beginning at 10AM\non a load and go basis. \nAccessible Parking: \nAccessible parking spaces will be designated by signage along New Gower Street (between Queen Street and Duckworth Street) and along George Street (between Queen Street and Adelaide Street). George Street accessible parking can be accessed via Queen Street. \nAccessible Viewing Area: \nAn accessible viewing area is located at 354 Water Street near Dollarama and is available on a first come\, first served basis. \nSensory Friendly Area: \nA sensory friendly area is located on Water Street from the TD building (corner of Prescott St.) to Solomon’s Lane.  \nThis Sunday\, thousands of people will descend upon the downtown area for two exciting events. The Downtown Christmas Parade will take place starting 12 p.m. Additionally\, the Grand Slam of Curling will be taking place at Mary Brown’s Centre\, which welcomes curlers and visitors from across the world to the city. \nWhile downtown will be bustling with excitement\, there will also be significant traffic and parking impacts on Sunday\, December 1. \nTo avoid delays\, patrons are strongly encouraged to arrange a ride with friends or family\, use taxis or ride-sharing services\, or use public transit. The free metrobus shuttle arranged to reduce parking and traffic congestion for the Christmas Parade is also available to those attending the Grand Slam of Curling (more details below). \nIf choosing to drive\, arriving early is strongly recommended\, as motorists should expect delays\, road closures\, and limited parking availability. \nDoors will open for the Grand Slam of Curling at 10:30 a.m. \nFree Metrobus Shuttle\nA free\, wheelchair-accessible park and ride service will operate on a load-and-go basis starting at 10 a.m. from two locations: \n\nConfederation Building: \n\nBuses will shuttle passengers to and from Bannerman Road.\nThe last bus will depart at 12 p.m.\n\n\nNewfoundland & Labrador Housing Building (off Captain Whelan Drive): \n\nBuses will shuttle passengers to and from the Mary Brown’s Centre.\nThe last bus will depart at 12:30 p.m.\n\n\n\nReturn shuttles will be available at the drop-off locations (Bannerman Road & Mary Brown’s Centre) immediately following the parade. \nThere will also be a shuttle running from Mary Brown Centre starting 7:30 p.m. following the men’s final at the Grand Slam of Curling to the Newfoundland & Labrador Housing Building only. \nParking Availability\nOn street parking will be very limited. \nThere are pay per use parking garages located at 8 New Gower Street\, 351 Water Street\, Metro Park\, 330 Duckworth Street\, A.P. Parking Garage and Clift’s Baird’s Cove. \nNo Parking – Tow Away\nVehicles parked in the following areas will be towed beginning 8 a.m. on Sunday\, December 1: \n\nFactory Lane – both sides\nPlymouth Road – both sides\nDuckworth Street – both sides Plymouth Road to Prescott Street\nPrescott Street – both sides Duckworth Street to Water Street\nWater Street – both sides Prescott Street to Hamilton Avenue\nCircular Road – north side Monkstown Road to King’s Bridge Road/Empire Avenue\nBannerman Road – west side\n\nRoad Closures and Traffic Flow\nThe parade will travel from Factory Lane to the Water Street/Springdale Street intersection. The full parade route is available on the Downtown St. John’s website.  \nThe following roads will be closed effective the times noted below. These times are subject to change based on operational and safety requirements: \n\nDuckworth Street (Temperance Street to Prescott Street) – 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.\n\n\nDuckworth Street (Church Hill to Prescott Street) – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.\nWater Street (Prescott Street to Waldegrave Street/Harbour Drive) – 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.\nWater Street (Waldegrave Street/Harbour Drive to Hamilton Avenue) – 10:15 a.m. to 2 p.m.\nEmpire Avenue (Forest Road to Quidi Vidi Road) – 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.\nFactory Lane – 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.\nForest Road (King’s Bridge Road to Empire Avenue) – 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.\nCavendish Square/Ordnance Street – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.\nPrescott Street (Gower Street to Water Street) – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.\nQueen Street – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.\nGeorge Street – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.\nWaldegrave Street – 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.\nSpringdale Street (Water Street to New Gower Street) – 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.\nHarbour Drive – Access via Waldegrave Street will be closed 11:30 a.m. until the end of the parade to accommodate pedestrian traffic. Access will be available through the Prescott/Water Street intersection for the duration of the parade. Traffic delays are expected in the area until the parade concludes.\n\nFor those headed to the Grand Slam of Curling\, please note that the Mary Brown Centre drop-off area is only accessible to west bound traffic on New Gower Street. East bound traffic (i.e. from Pitt’s Memorial or Barter’s Hill/New Gower intersection) can use the St. John’s Convention Centre drop off area. Pedestrians should use the signalized intersections or skywalk to cross New Gower. \nWe ask that all pedestrians please use cross walks when crossing roadways and proceed with extra caution during high traffic times. \nAccessibility\nThe GoBus drop off and pick up location for the parade is on George Street next to Jungle Jim’s. GoBus users must reserve their ride.  \nAccessible parking permit holders can avail of parking located along George Street\, accessed via Queen Street.  There will also be accessible parking along New Gower Street. An accessible viewing area for the Christmas Parade is located at 354 Water Street on a first come\, first served basis. \nAccessible passholders for the Grand Slam of Curling can access the St. John’s Convention Centre until 11:30 a.m.\, after which time Waldegrave Street will be closed.
