Thrive St. John’s Street Reach has expanded to include a full time street-based outreach service Downtown

Two Thrive St. John’s Street Reach Outreach workers will be on the streets of downtown St. John’s generally between the hours of 10:00 am to 12:00 Noon and 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm daily, Monday thru Friday (with the exception of Friday mornings).

Services provided:

• Crisis Interventions
• Harm Reduction supplies and overdose prevention
• Referrals to services (community supports, food banks, health services etc.)
• Housing & Homelessness Prevention specific supports
• Assistance to eliminate barriers to access supports (i.e. obtain ID’s, open a bank account)
• Pick up improperly discarded drug use supplies
• Assistance with applications

Resources available to people

Resources may vary depending on donations and funding, but generally outreach workers will make available:

• Snacks & water
• Sterile drug use supplies
• Naloxone Kits
• Access to outerwear

During extreme weather staff will make every effort to provide supplies that would minimize risks

Outreach Workers provide Person-Centered Care – What does this mean?

At Thrive we believe in the inherent dignity and value of every person. We also believe that people have the right to access services that respects their autonomy and ability to make decisions about their own lives.

• All interactions with outreach workers are voluntary;
• Outreach workers will not pressure individuals to move locations;
• The individual determines what services or supports are most important for them

Downtown Pedestrian Mall to Open June 20

The Downtown Pedestrian Mall (DPM) will open on June 20, and will run until September 2, 2024. Operating daily from noon until 10 p.m., Water Street from Adelaide Street to Prescott Street will transform into a bustling vehicle-free, people-friendly zone.

The Downtown Pedestrian Mall will be enhanced with a variety of new activities, including:  

• Music on Water - The City is excited to host two concerts at the Downtown Pedestrian Mall this summer which will feature local musicians. Concerts will take place on July 6 and August 31 from 3 to 5 p.m. 
• Markets on Water - Every second Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., starting July 4, the Downtown Pedestrian Mall will host local vendors, artists and makers from the St. John’s Farmer’s Market, Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador, IceberGallery and more.  There will also be a variety of food trucks.
• Public Art - This summer, enjoy vibrant public art by local visual artists displayed throughout the Downtown Pedestrian Mall. 

In addition to the above initiatives and events, there will be pop-up events each Friday throughout the summer showcasing local entertainers. The City also provides free space on the Downtown Pedestrian Mall for organizations to get creative and engage with the community. More information is available on the City’s Downtown Pedestrian Mall webpage.
