The City is planning for the next phase of the Water Street infrastructure project, set to start in spring 2023. The work includes excavation and underground work at the intersections of Water Street at Prescott Street/Job’s Cove, and Waldegrave Street.
Property owners, business owners, employees and people who live in the area are encouraged to attend a virtual information session to learn about the next phase of work prior to the construction season.

City staff, representatives from the engineering consultant CBCL, and the City’s designated business liaison for the Water Street Project will be available to answer questions during the virtual sessions.
This is the final phase of any underground construction required for this project, which began in 2018. Four phases have been completed to date.
The City of St. John’s staff have reviewed the past three years of the downtown pedestrian mall and are preparing to make recommendations to City Council on a proposed plan for the next three years.
One of the recommendations is to NOT include the section of Water Street from Clift’s Baird’s Cove to Prescott Street within the pedestrian mall road closure event. This does not impact the ability to have a parklet/ patio in front of your business location within this block.
The main rationale for this recommendation is safety. The Courthouse and a private parking lot within this section require 24/7 access by motor vehicles. Conflict between pedestrians and cars is one the City of St. John’s wishes to avoid. In addition, the City of St. John’s have heard from the inclusion community that options for closer Go Bus services and accessible parking are needed. Some of the parking spaces within this block could be allocated accordingly.

Almost 50,000 spectators had their Christmas wishes granted as they were treated to a fantastic array of floats, bands, performing groups and lovable characters at the 2022 Downtown St. John’s Christmas Parade. “It was an awesome day for the Parade with light winds and clear skies. You could really feel the excitement in the air as Santa Claus returned to Downtown streets following a weather postponement last Sunday.”, said Gaylynne Gulliver of Downtown St. John’s.
Employees of Newfoundland Power, a corporate sponsor of the event, were out in full force gathering food for Santa’s annual food drive. Over 12,000 pounds of food with a cash value of $38,520.00 was collected in aid of the Community Food Sharing Association as well as thousands in cash donations. Newfoundland Power are also matching funds collected at the Parade up to $15,000.00
