Downtown St. John’s Requests City to Waive Parklet Program Fees for 2022

The Downtown St. John’s Business Commission encourages the City of St. John’s to reconsider the City staff recommendation and continue to waive all application and permit fees for the development of parklets on City and/or private land for 2022.

Downtown businesses need another summer season of commerce to help rebuild after two years of devastating losses due to the pandemic. Waiving fees in 2022 will allow them time to regain some financial losses, further recuperate costs of parklet infrastructure and allow the businesses more time to better plan for parklet fee increases in 2023.

It is important to highlight that the Halifax Regional Municipality, Downtown Saint John, N.B., Downtown Sydney, among others are continuing to support their businesses by waiving application and permit fees for parklet programs in the 2022 season. A similar approach by the City of St. John’s would be appreciated.

Federal Government Temporarily Expands Access to Lockdown Program and Worker Lockdown Benefit

Using regulatory authority provided in Bill C-2, the government intends to introduce new regulations that would:

• Expand the Local Lockdown Program to include employers subject to capacity-limiting restrictions of 50 per cent or more; and reduce the current-month revenue decline threshold requirement to 25 per cent. Eligible employers will receive wage and rent subsidies from 25 per cent up to a maximum of 75 per cent, depending on their degree of revenue loss. The 12-month revenue decline test continues to not be required in order to access this support.
• Expand the Canada Worker Lockdown Benefit to include workers in regions where provincial or territorial governments have introduced capacity-limiting restrictions of 50 per cent or more. As announced previously, this benefit will provide $300 a week in income support to eligible workers who are directly affected by a COVID-19-related public health lockdown, and who have lost 50 per cent or more of their income as a result.

These updated regulations will apply from December 19, 2021, to February 12, 2022, during which time it is expected that public health authorities will continue to implement “circuit-breaker” restrictions that limit the spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 across Canada.

Winter Parking Bans Come into Effect January 5

Overnight parking restrictions for streets in the designated Downtown St. John’s Business District come into effect on Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at 12:30 a.m. .

These restrictions are in effect daily.

In the Downtown St. John’s Business District, vehicles are not allowed to park in the early morning between 4 and 6 a.m., regardless of street or snow conditions, on:

• Water Street, from Waldegrave Street to Prescott Street 
• Duckworth Street, from New Gower Street to Cochrane Street
