The City of St. John’s will continue work on the Water Street Infrastructure Project in 2025 and 2026. This multi-year capital improvement initiative focuses on replacing and rehabilitating water mains and sewer lines, along with combined sewer separation, between Waldegrave Street and Prescott Street.
Most of the project was completed in 2023. The final phase involves installing a cured-in-place pipe liner in the sewer system between Queen Street and Prescott Street. The pipe lining will be completed using a trenchless method. To complete this phase, exploratory work is scheduled for fall 2025, with the sewer lining construction beginning in spring 2026.
Estimated Timeline:
- Fall 2025: Minor traffic advisories are expected on Water Street for exploratory work to assess the current infrastructure. No lining work will occur. Disruptions will be minimal.
- Spring 2026: Lining of the brick sewer will begin in early spring and be completed prior to the summer tourist season. Disruptions to existing sewer services and minor traffic delays can be expected during this time.
The City of St. John’s will make every effort to minimize disruptions and will provide updates on traffic, service interruptions, and project progress. You can follow progress for this project at EngageStJohns.ca and/or subscribe to receive the latest City news and advisories.
